Character History:
Pre-Baldur's Gate 3:
Lae'zel is from Crèche K'liir, an asteroid beside the moon Selûne of Faerûn. There's not much information from her time in Crèche K'liir but from conversations between party members, we can understand that she has been training as a Githyanki warrior since she was 13. During the time she was undergoing training we can assume she was tutored in both body and mind. She highly respected her tutors and felt she was treated fairly by them as evident in conversations comparing Crèche Y'llek to her own home's methods. She is relatively well-read, as she references various Githyanki literature from her "education" from time to time. We also know she murdered several peers to get through her training. Githyanki are highly militaristic and believe that they are only as strong as their weakest warrior and most of the weaklings are culled by their peers in training, not by their tutors.

Most likely, she was only recently sent out to prove herself worthy, an act which requires obtaining the head of a Mind Flayer. After doing so, she would have been able to return and be considered a "kith'rak" or warrior. But instead of just getting a mind flayer's head, she got a "tadpole" as well.

Baldur's Gate 3:
Note on the nature of BG3: Because of the extensive number of variables with BG3's choice system, I'm going to keep her history to the basics, or "most played" outcomes that are just relevant to her specifically.

Lae'zel found herself on the Nautiloid after being captured by Mind Flayers, the sworn enemy of the Gith peoples. During her capture she was forcibly given a "tadpole" that quickly turns the host into a Mind Flayer. But for whatever reason, this transformation didn't happen. Instead, Lae'zel joined the protagonist "Tav" and found Tav and the other party members useful. They are formidable in battle and her best chances to carve her way to a Githyanki Crèche and any hopes of extracting the tadpole and being rid of a worse fate than death; ceremorphosis (fancy speak for "turning into a mind flayer").

Ultimately, the group reaches Crèche Y'llek and discover that what Lae'zel thought would be a cure for the impending ceremophosis and one she was willing to share with the party as thanks for their assistance was actually just memory extraction and death. To make matters worse, the god-queen of Gith, Vlaakith, who Lae'zel has literally worshipped proves to be hiding things and untrustworthy, to put it simply. Vlaakith orders the group's death and they are forced to fight their way out of the Crèche. As a result, by the end of Act I, Lae'zel is refocusing her convictions and believes the events to be a further test of her worth and capabilities. You would think that after an entire Crèche attacks the party trying to kill them in various ways that Lae'zel would be doubting Vlaakith or the ways of her people. But that is not the case! Only after the famous Kith'rak Voss, a Gith warrior of significant and ancient renown comes to the party with words of truth does Lae'zel begin questioning her god-queen.

Personality: Lae'zel is your no-nonsense, abrasive, purpose driven party member. She values all things strength, whether they be muscle or smarts, making her incredibly judgemental. While abhorring, denying or disregarding anything associated with weakness. She's downright hostile toward it. Overall though, if you prove yourself in battle one way or another you'll eventually earn her respect, trust and possibly her loyalty. But even with the most respect gained, don't expect any compliments or pats on the back. Lae'zel is ruthless, even in casual conversation she's rude, belittling and offensive to even her valued friends. One could argue she shows her affection through action, simply by assisting in battle or in the party's case, allowing them to join her in finding a cure her people could provide (or so they thought). However, if she were to ever be threatened, she'll sooner chop your head off than negotiate even if you were the best of friends. She's very quick to put emotions aside and has barely explored few emotions besides "anger". If it's a threat, it's better dead in her book and if she threatens death, she's promised it.

So that's the tip of the iceberg. With that said, I want to balance the intimidating and more cut throat nature she has by explaining that she's a very young adult (one potential party member simply calls her "child" rather than by name, her own people call her "young one", and frequently reference her inexperience). Although she carries herself with extreme confidence in all that she does and says, she does not have tales of adventure like the rest of the party. She does not reference any experience at all, except for her training. She has a ton to prove and her demeanor, at least in part, stems from that need for approval. Perhaps not the approval of those around her, but the approval of her culture and the Gith. Her people are fearless, xenophobic conquerors whose goal is to rule the planes including all of the "lesser" races. Part of her training was to use and abuse others with every tool she has. She's not shy of admitting that either. Her purpose is to be worthy of the warrior title one day and "ascend". So if anything, she's an embodiment of those expectations with a naïve yearning to prove herself at whatever cost.

In some ways, that cost was her blinding faith in her god-queen Vlaakith (which literally means 'death'). When writings are found that claim Vlaakith to be an imposter, Lae'zel denies it, calling it heresy. When her people seek to kill her and the party, she believes it to be a trial by Vlaakith. She fully believes that all failures are her doing, never her people, never her circumstances and it causes her to double down on what she's been taught and never to question. This is part of her emphasized stubbornness (even her own people call her stubborn and that's by their standards!) and also undoubtedly the brainwashing Githyanki youths experience in their training. Although kith'rak Voss chipped through that stubbornness with undeniable truths, there are years of reinforced brainwashing to contend with and Lae'zel sits on re-evaluating everything she's known to be true, and ready to throw herself at the dragons for her wrongdoings.

Powers/Abilities: Lae'zel is a Fighter. Fighters specialize in weapon-specific mastery, hers being two-handed weaponry. She also possesses some abilities unique to Githyanki, such as: Mage Hand that allows her to control an astral hand that's capable of interacting with objects at a distance from the caster, Enhance Leap which is fancy for "jump really far", and Misty Step which is a spell to teleport to a visible location. Other than that, she's all hack, slash and a whole lot of threats describing how she plans to murder you.
